Today was my second day back teaching classes and it was reassuring and promising. My first day with the first years was a drag as I was unprepared and had the first day jitters, but today I was back; cracking jokes, speaking wise and keeping things light. My second day classes were third and fourth years, majoring in English, and could understand me a little better. That helped. The first years are Engineers and won't need English unless they plan on doing an exchange. Only a few get to go, however, and most have shown they've pulled out of the race, by not paying attention or contributing.
If there are any Chinese high school students out there reading this blog - major in English. My Engineering classes are 80% dudes, but my English majored classes, total 3 males out of 60 students, smashing even U of G's ratio. Same logic applies for you teachers. Today, I felt like Indy in Raiders of the Lost Ark with all those girls batting their eyes at me.
This semester should be alright. As long as I can keep those first years excited - a tall task considering the attention spans of kids these days. I blame it on the internet and those computer book things. Why back in my day....
